At a glance

Gondola access can make glacier descents look easy, but they remain high-alpine terrain with avalanches, crevasses, cliffs and complex return logistics.

  • Conditions-dependent
  • Avalanche equipment essential
  • High-alpine navigation
  • Guide strongly recommended
01

Not a piste

There is no daily safety guarantee beyond prepared slopes. Every participant is responsible for decisions, spacing and competent avalanche-rescue equipment use.

02

Preparation

Carry a transceiver, probe, shovel and helmet and know rescue procedures. Glacier routes may require additional equipment determined by the route and guide.

03

Choosing the day

Check the avalanche bulletin, wind, visibility, temperature and gondola operation. When in doubt, ski on piste or postpone.
